West Ham held to 1-1 tie by Stoke in EPL

LONDON (AP) - Defender Joey O'Brien scored his first Premier League goal in the 48th minute, giving West Ham a 1-1 tue with Stoke on Monday night.

Jonathan Walters put the visitors ahead in the 13th minute off Glenn Whelan's corner kick as defenders focused their attention on 6-foot-7 forward Peter Crouch.

O'Brien tied the score when he turned in Gary O'Neil's low cross along the 6-yard box.

West Ham (5-3-4) remained in seventh place, missing a chance to climb into fifth, Stoke (2-3-7) is 14th.

ROME (AP) - Pablo Osvaldo converted a penalty kick in the 71st minute after a goal-line assistant intervened to overturn the initial decision by the referee and Miralem Pjanic scored in the 86th to giveg Roma a 2-0 win over Torino in the Italian league.

Pjanic scored on a shot from the edge of the penalty area that deflected in off a defender,

Torino coach Giampiero Ventura had been ejected after the penalty kick for arguing.

Roma moved into sixth place, 12 points behind Serie A leader Juventus.

Torino remained three points clear of the relegation zone.

Carlos Vela scored twice in a three-minute span to help Real Sociedad rout Rayo Vallecano 4-0 in the Spanish.

Vela scored from 6 yards in the 31st minute, then added his fifth goal of the season in the 33rd from outside the penalty area. Mikel Gonzalez scored in the 61st and Gonzalo Castro in the 77th minute.

Sociedad is ninth with 16 points, ahead of 11-place Rayo on goal difference.
