Community driven MMO project Heroes and Villains now underway ...

[Update]: Right, there seems to be quite a bit of drama and history behind this project. Bearing in mind that I didn?t write the original post (it?s Peter here), let?s update with what I?ve learned.

It appears that Ms. Brooks is a former contributor to a project called Plan Z: The Phoenix Project; an earlier, and ongoing, effort to create a ?spiritual successor? to City of Heroes. An FAQ about that project can be found here.

The people behind The Phoenix Project would like it stated that Heroes and Villains is a totally unrelated effort. For more extensive details, I?d recommend popping down to the comments section for statements from some of the various people involved.

There are evidently some conflicts to sort out here regarding fair usage of materials created by volunteers, and my thoroughly un-legal brain has no opinion whatsoever on that particular matter. Ok! Keep all that in mind as you read the original story.

With the servers for City of Heroes being turned off tonight at midnight, news comes in from a new ?virtual studio? called Plan Z who intend to create a new superhero MMORPG to carry on where CoH left off.

The emphasis for Heroes and Villains will be ?on community, and not only will the game be initially created by volunteers but the plan is to get development underway then roll out crowd funding options.

Plan Z founder Amanda Brooks added:

?We?re aiming to create a genuinely community-focused and driven game, with an unprecedented level of communication between its developers and players.?Plan Z is just a collection of very passionate and very talented fans of comic books and games, so the line between developers and players is going to be very blurred, especially with the amount of consultation and feedback we?re going to be engaging in with other comic and gaming fans during the design process.

The new game will be driven by the Hero Engine?and their aim is to create a rich 3D universe, and content they have planned will include team and solo tasks, zone events and instanced missions which are set in Titan City.

No great comic story would be complete without its main characters so get ready to meet the heroic Legion led by Centurion, the cosmic Starlight League, then ancient Atlanteans, the ruthlessly evil Baron Skorpio and his Skorpion organization, the sinister Lemurians and more.

There is an under construction website online now as the project is just getting underway.

Soccer Goalkeeping Tips ? Recreation and Sports

The goalkeeper?s job is definitely the toughest of all soccer players. Even though a defender, midfielder or attacker can get off with a few blunders once in a while, a goal keeper?s blunders really are a lot more noticeable. To complicate things even further, modern goalkeepers have a whole lot more attributions than before. They need to coordinate the defense. They quite often have to work as sweepers, and they are able to fire off lethal counter attacks immediately after a clean save.

1 Versus 1 is a very popular routine. That being said, it?s very effective given that goal keepers are bound to become caught in a one on one challenge against an opposing attacker in practically every single game. Add to that, at beginner or youth levels, in which defenses are less demanding than they are with the professionals, 1-on-1s are quite typical for goalkeepers. You need to train them properly.

Ab Volley is one of the toughest goal keeping drills. If executed correctly, it?s an extremely effective one. Here?s how it goes: your goalie must remain on his bottom, in the very same position he?d do ab situps in. You or a teammate will need to throw the ball towards him and while he?s doing ab situps, he will pass it back to you. To speed things up a little, you can have an additional group of 8-10 players behind the goal, returning the balls back to the firing squad.

Automatic Fire. Have 8-10 players stand at about twenty to thirty yards from the goal, each with his or her own ball. At your signal, the attackers must, 1 by 1, run forward and kick the ball from a distance you specified earlier. Your goal keeper must be under a constant rain of shots, jumping from one particular post to the other to save the ball. It is not really that essential if he saves them or not, it is crucial that he understands the way to react rapidly and get up from the floor fast and be prepared for an additional shot.

Chromatin remodeling: Activating ACL1 with a little help from 'friends'

ScienceDaily (Nov. 29, 2012) ? Chromatin remodeling -- the packaging and unpackaging of genomic DNA and its associated proteins -- regulates a host of fundamental cellular processes including gene transcription, DNA repair, programmed cell death as well as cell fate. In their latest study, scientists at the Stowers Institute for Medical Research are continuing to unravel the finicky details of how these architectural alterations are controlled.

Through a series of biochemical experiments, Stowers Investigators Ron Conaway, Ph.D., and Joan Conaway, Ph.D., and their team discovered that chromatin remodeling enzyme and suspected oncogene ALC1 (short for Amplified in Liver Cancer 1) is activated through an unusual mechanism: Its shape shifts in the presence of its activators. Their finding identifies a new instrument in cells' molecular repertoire of chromatin-remodeling tools and a potential cancer therapeutic target.

One of the main tasks of chromatin remodeling enzymes, Ron Conaway explains, is "to make DNA accessible so events like repair and gene transcription can occur." Postdoctoral research associate and first author Aaron Gottschalk, Ph.D., previously figured out that ALC1 required protein partners to activate its remodeling function. Publishing in an upcoming issue of the Journal of Biological Chemistry, he dissects the mechanism by which this occurs.

ALC1 and its ilk have a common protein domain, SNF2, that uses the energy of ATP hydrolysis to move nucleosomes -- the basic repeating units of chromatin -- around, in a process called nucleosome sliding.

"I was intrigued because ALC1 has a unique macrodomain not found on any other SNF2 family member," Gottschalk says. His interest was further piqued when he found that while most ATP-dependent chromatin remodelers function as large multi-protein complexes, ALC1 appeared to work by itself. At the same time, where most of its group-happy family members readily demonstrated nucleosome sliding activity in vitro, ALC1 was not only a lone ranger but also "completely dead on its own."

Gottschalk deduced that ALC1 may function independently, but it needs a boost from a couple of sidekicks: PARP1, an enzyme that responds to several kinds of DNA damage; and NAD+, the substrate by which PARP1 transfers chains of poly (ADP-ribose) onto itself and other target proteins, in a process called PARylation.

Only when PARP1 and NAD+ are on the scene does ALC1 spring into action, altering the accessibility of DNA by shifting nucleosomes around. Gottschalk's earlier findings were published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences in June 2009.

"We then extended this research," Conaway says, "and the upshot of our recent JBC paper is that ALC1 is likely activated through a series of physical interactions. ALC1's unique macrodomain can bind PAR, and protein-protein interactions also occur between ALC1 and PARP1." Gottschalk and coauthor Rushi Trivedi, a graduate student in the Biochemistry & Molecular Biology department at KU Medical Center, developed a novel footprinting assay that enabled this observation. Rather than merely activating ALC1 and moving on, the researchers found that the trio of PARP1, NAD+ and ALC1 hangs out in a stable complex.

"So PARylated PARP1 and NAD+ are allosteric effectors -- by binding to ALC1, they alter its state from dormant to active," Conaway says. "It's an interesting mechanism that's different from how most other chromatin remodelers work. It may also help explain other evidence that PARP1 has the ability to rearrange nucleosomes and reorganize chromatin; this could be one way by which PARP1 exerts its influence."

Apart from its role in modifying chromatin structure, not much is currently known about ALC1. It's regarded as a possible oncogene, being found in excess in hepatocellular carcinoma cells and because overexpression of ALC1 in mice induces spontaneous tumors.

PARP1, on the other hand, has attracted plenty of interest as a potential anticancer drug target, due to its importance in maintaining genomic integrity. For example, in breast cancer cells lacking BRCA1 or BRCA2 function, blocking PARP could effectively remove the cells' last line of defense against DNA-damaging chemotherapy agents. To date, no PARP inhibitor has made it past phase III clinical trials, but pharmaceutical companies continue to chip away at the challenges around optimizing this form of targeted cancer therapy.

"A better understanding of the in-depth biochemistry we're uncovering on ALC1 and PARP1 may, in the long term, ultimately lead to new or more refined therapeutic strategies," Gottschalk says.

Meanwhile, having observed that ALC1 comes to life upon interacting with friends, Gottschalk now wants to understand precisely how this activation happens. With a knockout ALC1 mouse model handy, plans are afoot to extend his studies to an in vivo characterization of a chromatin remodeler that boasts an illustrious family pedigree, yet stands apart in the crowd.

Funding for this study came from a National Institute of General Medical Sciences grant (GM41628), and a grant to the Stowers Institute from the Helen Nelson Medical Research Fund at the Greater Kansas City Community Foundation.

Google TV Update Adds Voice Search, Improved Guide

A new Google TV update makes being a couch potato even easier.

The update is rolling out this week - first to LG devices - and adds voice search, PrimeTime, and better YouTube integration, Google said in a blog post.

Now, users can instantly access TV shows and movies, play online videos, open applications, and search Google, by just asking.

The new feature provides quick access to any channel (just say "CNN" to change stations), live and streaming options, and instructional YouTube videos (ask "how to tie a bow tie"). Unsure of exactly what you're in the mood for? Simply say "search movies with Jeff Bridges" for a list of possibilities in the new, more visual search results page.

Additionally, Google TV's revamped guide, now called PrimeTime, makes it easier to find favorite content. Accessible anywhere in the Google TV app, users can quickly flip through live TV, access favorite channels, see recently watched TV shows, and find new suggestions.

LG device owners will receive the Google TV update in the next few weeks, according to product Managers Greg Funk and Eric Liu, while it rolls out to other second-generation hardware in the coming months. First-gen devices will see updates to PrimeTime and YouTube.

Google TV already received an update in October 2011, when the service integrated the Google Play store, customized the home screen, and improved content from Netflix, YouTube, HBO GO, and other streaming sites.

"The initial version of Google TV wasn't perfect," Google said last year, "but launching it gave us the opportunity to learn."

That learning process also led to a better YouTube viewing experience on Google TV, which the company announced Tuesday.

The updated app for Android smartphones/tablets and Google TV automatically pairs the devices over the same Wi-Fi connection, allowing big-screen playback of any YouTube video from an Android-based phone or tablet. Remote control-like options ? pause, scroll, skip ? are included, as well as the ability to search for videos or browse the Web on your gadget while video playback continues, uninterrupted, on the TV.

VCU coach claims he lost job for being gay

RICHMOND, VA (WWBT)- The head VCU Women's Volleyball coach claims he lost his job because he is gay. Now, James Finley says an investigation has been launched by a new division of the University meant to support diversity.

Finley says he just got back from the Atlantic 10 Conference championship in Pittsburgh, where his team performed better than expected. He said a conference had been scheduled for him with new Athletic Director Ed McLaughlin upon his return.

"We sat down and he was just very short and simply said, 'We want to go in a new direction. We're not going to renew your contract. Thanks for your time.'"?recalled?Finley of the exchange with the new director, Ed McLaughlin. ?

Finley said the decision came as a shock, given the team's performance.

"We were 25-6 this year," said Finley. "We moved into a new conference. We were picked to finish 6th and we finished 3rd. We made it to the semi-finals of the A10 Championship. We had a great season. It was the highest winning percentage that we've had with the volleyball program at VCU."

Finley went on to point out that he was brought in to "fix a team in shambles."

He also pointed out that his players boasted a high grade-point average, and graduation rates in keeping with NCAA standards.

It's why Finley said he began to question why he was let go: "It's just unheard of for someone to have a winning record and just get let go."

Finley said McLaughlin spoke to his team shortly after he was let go and that what was said in this meeting gave him pause.

"He tells the girls that they need someone that represents the University well," said Finley. "And that really just stabbed me in the heart. Then I was like 'wow, this guy just absolutely doesn't want to have somebody gay on his staff.'"

Finley said his?conclusions don't just?stem from the decision not to renew his contract. He?pointed to a pattern of behavior that indicated discrimination.

Finley?claimed?the first time he ever spoke to the new athletic director, Ed McLaughlin, was to learn his?contract wouldn't be renewed. And he says McLaughlin regularly avoided him at social events with?athletes and donors. ?

"He would avoid me in public places," said Finley. "I would say hi to him and he wouldn't respond."

Finley also claimed that the only other openly gay employee at VCU was demoted. He says that's why he decided to speak out.

"Ultimately, I came to this decision that I had to stand up, because you know we have a lot of gay and lesbian student athletes," said Finley. "I can't let them down. They have depended on me to have a safe voice and a safe place to be. We should be judged on the job we do. We shouldn't be judged on who we love."

Finley says he would like his job back because he believes in VCU, but even if that doesn't work out, he's glad he spoke up -?and Finley's husband,?John Sternlicht, agrees.

"I hope and have faith that VCU will stick to its core principals of diversity and anti-discrimination," said Sternlicht.

The University is limited in its ability to respond to this story, because this does involve a personnel issue. However, they did confirm that Finley's contract will end at the end of the year and released the following:

"We adhere to federal and state laws and regulations that protect the privacy of our employees and the conditions of their employment. The employment action was taken in compliance with appropriate VCU employment practices and policies.

VCU and its athletic director, Ed McLaughlin, are fully committed to the core value of diversity ? as reflected in the university's diversity statement and strategic plan. ?As the Commonwealth's most diverse university, we practice the spirit of that policy statement every day."

BRUSSELS, Nov. 28, 2012 (Reuters) ? The Greek government and financial markets were cheered on Tuesday by an agreement between euro zone finance ministers and the International Monetary Fund to reduce Greece's debt, paving the way for the release of urgently needed aid loans.

The deal, clinched at the third attempt after weeks of wrangling, removes the biggest risk of a sovereign default in the euro zone for now, ensuring the near-bankrupt country will stay afloat at least until after a 2013 German general election.

"Tomorrow, a new day starts for all Greeks," Prime Minister Antonis Samaras told reporters at 3 a.m. in Athens after staying up to follow the tense Brussels negotiations.

After 12 hours of talks, international lenders agreed on a package of measures to reduce Greek debt by more than 40 billion euros, projected to cut it to 124 percent of gross domestic product by 2020.

In an additional new promise, ministers committed to taking further steps to lower Greece's debt to "significantly below 110 percent" in 2022.

That was a veiled acknowledgement that some write-off of loans may be necessary in 2016, the point when Greece is forecast to reach a primary budget surplus, although Germany and its northern allies continue to reject such a step publicly.

Analyst Alex White of JP Morgan called it "another moment of ?creative ambiguity' to match the June (EU) Summit deal on legacy bank assets; i.e. a statement from which all sides can take a degree of comfort".

The euro strengthened, European shares climbed to near a three-week high and safe haven German bonds fell on Tuesday, after the agreement to reduce Greek debt and release loans to keep the economy afloat.

"The political will to reward the Greek austerity and reform measures has already been there for a while. Now, this political will has finally been supplemented by financial support," economist Carsten Brzeski of ING said.

PARLIAMENTARY APPROVAL

To reduce the debt pile, ministers agreed to cut the interest rate on official loans, extend the maturity of Greece's loans from the EFSF bailout fund by 15 years to 30 years, and grant a 10-year interest repayment deferral on those loans.

German Finance Minister Wolfgang Schaeuble said Athens had to come close to achieving a primary surplus, where state income covers its expenditure, excluding the huge debt repayments.

"When Greece has achieved, or is about to achieve, a primary surplus and fulfilled all of its conditions, we will, if need be, consider further measures for the reduction of the total debt," Schaeuble said.

Eurogroup Chairman Jean-Claude Juncker said ministers would formally approve the release of a major aid installment needed to recapitalize Greece's teetering banks and enable the government to pay wages, pensions and suppliers on December 13 - after those national parliaments that need to approve the package do so.

The German and Dutch lower houses of parliament and the Grand Committee of the Finnish parliament have to endorse the deal. Losing no time, Schaeuble said he had asked German lawmakers to vote on the package this week.

Greece will receive 43.7 billion euros in four installments once it fulfils all conditions. The 34.4 billion euro December payment will comprise 23.8 billion for banks and 10.6 billion in budget assistance.

The IMF's share, less than a third of the total, will be paid out only once a buy-back of Greek debt has occurred in the coming weeks, but IMF Managing Director Christine Lagarde said the Fund had no intention of pulling out of the program.

Austrian Chancellor Werner Faymann welcomed the deal but said Greece still had a long way to go to get its finances and economy into shape. Vice Chancellor Michael Spindelegger told reporters the important thing had been keeping the IMF on board.

"It had threatened to go in a direction that the IMF would exit Greek financing. This was averted and this is decisive for us Europeans," he said.

The debt buy-back was the part of the package on which the least detail was disclosed, to try to avoid giving hedge funds an opportunity to push up prices. Officials have previously talked of a 10 billion euro program to buy debt back from private investors at about 35 cents in the euro.

The ministers promised to hand back 11 billion euros in profits accruing to their national central banks from European Central Bank purchases of discounted Greek government bonds in the secondary market.

BETTER FUTURE

The deal substantially reduces the risk of a Greek exit from the single currency area, unless political turmoil were to bring down Samaras's pro-bailout coalition and pass power to radical leftists or rightists.

The biggest opposition party, the hard left SYRIZA, which now leads Samaras's center-right New Democracy in opinion polls, dismissed the deal and said it fell short of what was needed to make Greece's debt affordable.

Greece, where the euro zone's debt crisis erupted in late 2009, is proportionately the currency area's most heavily indebted country, despite a big cut this year in the value of privately-held debt. Its economy has shrunk by nearly 25 percent in five years.

Negotiations had been stalled over how Greece's debt, forecast to peak at 190-200 percent of GDP in the coming two years, could be cut to a more bearable 120 percent by 2020.

The agreed figure fell slightly short of that goal, and the IMF insisted that euro zone ministers should make a firm commitment to further steps to reduce the debt if Athens faithfully implements its budget and reform program.

The main question remains whether Greek debt can become affordable without euro zone governments having to write off some of the loans they have made to Athens.

Germany and its northern European allies have hitherto rejected any idea of forgiving official loans to Athens, but European Union officials believe that line may soften after next September's German general election.

Schaeuble told reporters that it was legally impossible for Germany and other countries to forgive debt while simultaneously giving new loan guarantees. That did not explicitly preclude debt relief at a later stage, once Greece completes its adjustment program and no longer needs new loans.

But senior conservative German lawmaker Gerda Hasselfeldt said there was no legal possibility for a debt "haircut" for Greece in the future either.

At Germany's insistence, earmarked revenue and aid payments will go into a strengthened "segregated account" to ensure that Greece services its debts.

A source familiar with IMF thinking said a loan write-off once Greece has fulfilled its program would be the simplest way to make its debt viable, but other methods such as forgoing interest payments, or lending at below market rates and extending maturities could all help.

German central bank governor Jens Weidmann has suggested that Greece could "earn" a reduction in debt it owes to euro zone governments in a few years if it diligently implements all the agreed reforms. The European Commission backs that view.

The ministers agreed to reduce interest on already extended bilateral loans in stages from the current 150 basis points above financing costs to 50 bps.

Global Warming. I'll let you decide if it's as bad as a nuclear armageddon.
Computer Hacking. In theory, it could cut power to a lot of people, as the article mentions, but so could some well-placed sticks of dynamite.

Also, you will need to be thinking about how you?ll be taking payments on your site. Make sure this is secure as well and if needs be, get someone on-board who specialises in e-commerce payments.

Finally you will need to think about the long game. In light of this, be sure you have the knowledge needed either internally to maintain a website and develop it further ? if you don?t have this in place, I would seriously recommend out-sourcing it to an appropriately qualified Web Developer to ensure your site works as needed for every possible customer visiting your site.

Deals abound for people who want to walk through a virtual mall on Cyber Monday, in search of holiday season gifts. Just don't forget about that important report your boss is interested in.

Electronic goods top the nation's wish list, says Louis Ramirez, senior features writer at dealnews.com, a bargain-focused website that tracks the shopping frenzy. But from clothing to vacation packages, many other items are available at enticing prices.

"There's definitely more deals this year than last year," Mr. Ramirez says. And for many items, the deals will continue past Monday as retailers try to make sure that their crucial season has big sales volume.

"Don't buy toys on Black Friday or Cyber Monday. They'll be a lot cheaper in the two weeks before Christmas," Mr. Ramirez says. The caveat to remember: If there's a particular must-have toy, you need to weigh the prospect that prices may fall against the risk that the toy may sell out.

For tablet computers, by contrast, he says some hot deals have already passed by. The chance to get Apple's older iPad tablet (version three) at lower prices has evaporated, so shoppers hankering for Apple's signature tablet are looking at starting prices of $499 (fourth-generation iPad without cellular access). Similarly, don't expect to find the Google Nexus 7 tablet in stock, in its 16-gigabyte version.

"For TV's, the availability is great," Ramirez says, with retailers moving quickly to match discounts by competitors.

Here are some of the places that may be worth checking out, plus some shopping tips to consider:

? Newegg is advertising "Shell Shocker" and "Eggxtra" deals on computer hardware. In one deal, customers may find that an Android smartphone from Samsung (the Galaxy S Blaze 4G) is "free," if they're ready to sign up for a monthly service plan with T-Mobile.

? Kohl's says deals will flow "all week long," and offers an extra 20 percent off all purchases through Tuesday. For people who want towels or twill pants rather than a tablet, that's pretty attractive. As with most retailers pushing for online revenue, free shipping is also included.

JERUSALEM (AP) ? Israeli Defense Minister Ehud Barak on Monday abruptly announced he was quitting politics, injecting new turmoil into the Israeli political system weeks ahead of general elections.

Barak, Israel's most-decorated soldier and one-time prime minister, said he would stay on in his current post until a new government is formed following the Jan. 22 balloting.

His resignation could mean the departure of the most moderating influence on hawkish Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, who holds a wide lead in polls and is expected to easily win re-election. Barak, who heads a small centrist faction in parliament, often served as Netanyahu's unofficial envoy to Washington to smooth over differences with the Obama White House.

His impending departure comes at a key time for Israel, as the nation struggles to find its way in a region where the old order of Arab autocrats has been swept aside by the Arab Spring and the rise of Islamist political parties. Israel also faces a looming decision on whether to attack Iran's nuclear program, which the Jewish state fears is designed to develop atomic weapons ? a charge Tehran denies.

Less than a week ago, Barak led an eight-day military offensive against the Hamas militant group that rules the Gaza Strip. The fighting, aimed at ending rocket fire from the Palestinian territory. ended in a fragile truce.

"I didn't make this decision (to leave politics) without hesitating, but I made it wholeheartedly," he told a hastily arranged news conference, saying he had been wrestling with the decision for weeks.

He evaded repeated questions about whether he might agree to serve as a Cabinet minister in an upcoming government, leaving open the possibility that he might still retain an impact on Israeli politics. While most Cabinet ministers also hold parliamentary seats, they do not have to be elected lawmakers, and such appointments have been made in the past.

Barak, 70, made the surprise announcement even after polls showed his breakaway Independence Party gaining momentum after the Gaza campaign.

Despite the bump in the polls, Barak still could have found himself fighting for his political survival once election day rolls around. Surveys before the Gaza operation were unkind to his party, at times showing it polling too weakly to even send a single representative to parliament.

"I feel I have exhausted my political activity, which had never been an object of desire for me. There are many ways for me to serve the country, not just through politics," he said, adding that his decision was spurred in part by his desire to spend more time with his family.

Possible replacements include Vice Premier Moshe Yaalon, a former military chief, and Shaul Mofaz, a former military chief and defense minister, who now serves as chairman of the opposition Kadima Party.

Barak's political career was as turbulent as his 36-year military career was dazzling.

The former war hero and military chief of staff blazed into politics on the coattails of his mentor, Yitzhak Rabin, and had been viewed by many as his heir apparent. With a resume that includes commanding some of Israel's most daring hostage rescue operations and raids, Barak was elected prime minister from the centrist Labor Party in 1999 ? just four years after retiring from the military. Many Israelis hoped he would parlay what was seen as his sharp strategic mind and unorthodox methods on the battlefield into long-elusive accords with the Palestinians and Syria.

But the consensus-building so important in the political arena did not mesh well with the go-it-alone style that served him in the military. Political allies and foes alike considered Barak aloof and imperious, and others questioned whether he possessed the interpersonal skills necessary to negotiate elusive accords with Israel's enemies.

Disappointed with his performance, Israeli voters booted Barak out of the premier's office in record time ? less than two years ? after his government unraveled with the outbreak of a Palestinian uprising and the collapse of U.S.-sponsored peace talks.

Hard-liner Ariel Sharon trounced him in a 2001 election. Barak left behind a legacy of failed peacemaking with the Palestinians and Syria, despite unprecedented offers of sweeping territorial concessions, and a contentious decision to end Israel's 18-year military occupation of south Lebanon overnight, which created a vacuum quickly filled by the anti-Israel Hezbollah guerrilla group.

For six years, the onetime Labor leader kept himself busy with lucrative speaking engagements and business consulting, reportedly amassing millions and cementing his image as a politician out of touch with his constituents.

But Barak returned to politics in 2007, handily recapturing the Labor leadership and replacing civilian Defense Minister Amir Peretz, who led a much-criticized war in Lebanon the previous summer.

But while Israelis liked Barak as defense minister, they didn't want him as their prime minister, and his party, which had led Israel to independence and governed the nation for its first three decades, lost its public appeal. In the 2009 election that brought Netanyahu to power, Labor won an all-time low of 13 of parliament's 120 seats.

Barak's dovish base turned on him after he led Labor into Netanyahu's conservative government, accusing Barak of betraying the party's ideals by joining forces with a man who at the time did not even recognize the principle of a Palestinian state.

In January 2011, he bolted Labor to form a new party, Independence, which has largely failed to resonate with the public.

Israeli hard-liners disliked him, too, accusing him of undermining the West Bank settlement movement by holding up building approvals, clearing squatters from West Bank homes and encouraging Netanyahu to support a temporary settlement construction slowdown.

But if Barak was unpopular with the public, he retained his clout with Netanyahu, whom he commanded in an elite special operations unit. As the prime minister's point man with the United States, Barak was welcomed in Washington as a moderating influence on Netanyahu's hard line policies toward the Arab world and Iran's nuclear program.

That alliance saw some rocky times recently with reports the prime minister objected to Barak's newly moderate tone that Israel should defer to the U.S. in deciding whether to attack Iranian nuclear facilities.

But the two seemed to have patched up things, appearing to work harmoniously on the recent Gaza campaign.

In a statement Monday, Netanyahu said he "respected" Barak's decision.

Chameleon-like changes in world's most abundant phytoplankton

ScienceDaily (Nov. 26, 2012) ? An international team of biologists led by Indiana University's David M. Kehoe has identified both the enzyme and molecular mechanism critical for controlling a chameleon-like process that allows one of the world's most abundant ocean phytoplankton, once known as blue-green algae, to maximize light harvesting for photosynthesis.

Responsible for contributing about 20 percent of the total oxygen production on the planet, the cyanobacteria Synechococcus uses its own unique form of a sophisticated response called chromatic acclimation to fine tune the absorption properties of its photosynthetic antenna complexes to the predominant ambient light color. The researchers identified and characterized an enzyme, MpeZ, that plays a pivotal role in the mechanism that allows two different water-soluble proteins in Synechococcus -- phycoerythrin I and II -- to alter their pigmentation in order to maximize photon capture for photosynthesis.

Scientists want to understand how cyanobacteria optimize their photosynthetic activities in different light conditions to gain a better appreciation of how human activities affect the phytoplankton's ability to produce oxygen and uptake the greenhouse gas carbon dioxide, which they consume in order to grow. Science and industry also use the pigment-protein complex phycoerythrin for fluorescent imaging and as fluorescent markers in biotechnology and health care applications.

"We now have the ability to attach a novel chromophore, part of a molecule responsible for its color, to phycoerythrin, which provides a new chromophore-protein combination that absorbs and fluoresces at a wavelength that is not currently commercially available," said Kehoe, a professor in the IU Bloomington College of Arts and Sciences' Department of Biology. "Our results suggest that this new chromoprotein is brighter and more stable than most on the market today."

Kehoe also noted IU has begun the process of filing a patent on the invention. The team found that the gene encoding the MpeZ enzyme is activated in blue light. Once produced, MpeZ then binds to antenna proteins containing pigments that normally catch green light and attaches an alternative chromophore that allows the antennae to capture blue light. The specific mechanism, called type IV chromatic acclimation, involves replacing three molecules of the green light-absorbing chromophore with an equal number of blue light-absorbing chromophore. This color-shifting is reversible and is controlled by the ratio of blue to green light in the environment.

"These 'chromatic adapters' are true chameleons that can efficiently live in green coastal waters as well as in blue offshore waters by modifying their pigmentation," Kehoe said. "Synechococcus cells maintained in blue light harvest preferentially blue light, while cells grown in green light harvest more green."
