Old-style arcade consoles are blipping and blinking their way onto ...

There are three options for buying video game cabinets. One is to buy a genuine used arcade cabinet from a specialized dealer or from an individual seller. Another is to choose a replica cabinet. And you can also buy a system designed to remind you of a classic arcade cabinet, but that actually plays several classic games.

Also remember that arcade game cabinets come in three basic forms: the stand-up box with a screen and controls on a little shelf; the sit-down kind, on which the surface of a table is where the game is played; and the type with an elaborate controller, such as half a motorcycle or military weapons tethered to the box.

Video game console websites offer a dizzying variety of new, used and classic consoles. These include BMIGaming, Arcades R Fun, X-Arcade, Dream Arcades, Birmingham Vending Company, Dream Authentics and many others. You can even buy arcade game cabinets in surprising places, such as on Amazon and eBay.

Hammacher Schlemmer sells a really cool product called the 30th Anniversary Authentic Pac-Man Arcade Game (shown). It's made by Namco, the same company that launched the original Pac-Man game consoles in 1980. The box is decorated with Pac-Man graphics, and the controls are the same as for the original Pac-Man?optimized console. But there's a surprise inside. The box is programmed with 12 additional games from the Pac-Man era, including Rally-X, Dig Dug, Rolling Thunder and, of course, Ms. Pac-Man.
