The nuclear power plant at Fukushima has been leaking contaminated water into the ocean for the two years since the accident that saw three of the plants six reactors suffer a meltdown, according to the head of the Nuclear Regulation Authority in Japan.?

Reactor buildings Unit 2, left, and Unit 1 are shown at the Fukushima Dai-ichi nuclear power plant in Okuama, Fukushima Prefecture, northern Japan. Japan's nuclear regulator says radioactive water from the crippled Fukushima power plant is probably leaking into the Pacific Ocean, a problem long suspected by experts but denied by the plant's operator.

The problem stems from the fact that ground water is leaking into the basement of the damaged reactors, and becoming contaminated, and whilst that water is being pumped out and stored in huge tanks on site, the inflow has not yet been stopped, meaning that ever more ground water enters the basement and becomes contaminated.

Tanaka explains that neither his staff, nor those working for the plant?s operator have discovered where the leaks are coming from, and therefore have not been able to stop them.?(Related article:?Chernobyl at Sea? Russia Building Floating Nuclear Power Plants)

Tokyo Electric Power (Tepco), the power plants operator, has constantly denied that any of that water has been leaking into the Ocean, but in the last few days it has?switched its position?and finally admitted that it can?t actually say for sure that the water is not leaking into the sea.?

ForexLive Asia Wrap: Japan holiday ? all eyes on China Q2 GDP

The forex trading headlines for Asia trading today, Monday July 15

It was a holiday Monday in Japan, which kept liquidity tight during the session. Most currencies were relatively quiet and range-bound, with AUD providing much of the action.

The Australian dollar opened and found some support in the early going, trading up to just shy of 0.9100 before sellers held it. The retrace down was shallow, with buyers ahead of 0.9050. The morning was spent waiting for the Q2 Chinese GDP figures, which were leaked about 90 seconds early via the China Securities Journal (see bullet, above). The Australian dollar jumped to 0.9090 on the leak and then found a little more strength to 0.9105/10 on official confirmation. But there was no further follow-though and it settled below 0.9095.

England coach eyes bronze medal as European Ladies' Golf Championship dream fades at Fulford

England coach eyes bronze medal as European Ladies' Golf Championship dream fades at Fulford

MEDAL up for grabs ? so let?s bag it.

That was the defiant rallying-cry issued by national coach Steve Robinson after England suffered semi-final pain to Spain in the European Ladies? Amateur Team Championship at Fulford Golf Club.

England?s battlers lost 4?-2? to a Spanish team posted as one of the pre-tournament favourites and who further underlined the Iberian nation?s sporting prowess.

That means that gold and silver medals have escaped England in today?s flight ?A? final between Spain and Austria.

But the bronze medal is there for England if they can see off Finland, who were flattened 5?-1? by the Austrians.

As Robinson declared: ?The girls, the squad, the backroom staff and myself are all disappointed.

?But I?ve told the girls that the difference between amateur golf and professional golf is that as a pro you?ve always got something to play for.

?You go up the leaderboard, you get more money.

?Now we have got something to play for. Now it?s up to us to finish third. That?s what is up for grabs on the last day so let?s win it.

?The thing about this championship is that you get nothing if you finish fourth.

?So if you come fourth then you might as well have finished 20th.?

Of the semi-final, Robinson said the Spanish opposition were just too tough to crack.

?We played some great golf out there, but Spain just keep chucking birdies at you,? he said.

?They putt well, they don?t give much away and they play with flair.?

He cited how the fighting spirit of England was typified by Bronte Law, who despite being three down with three to play, hit the pin with a glorious approach that eventually yielded an excellent birdie on the par-four 16th.

?But the Spanish girl did just the same and hit a birdie to win the match,? added the England coach, who is the head pro at Sandburn Hall GC.

He also explained that today?s bronze-battling rivals Finland would prove daunting opposition.

?They finished third in the world championships last year, so we will have to be up for them as it will not be a stroll in the park,? said the coach. ?But we have something to aim at.?

Added non-playing captain Emma Brown, of Malton & Norton GC: ?Three months ago I said that if we were to get a medal it would be a good week. We are still in with a chance of that medal.?

Today?s bronze medal play-off schedule is: foursomes ? Georgia Hall and Hayley Davis v Krista Bakker and Sanna Nuutinen (8.20am), Meghan MacLaren and Sarah-Jane Boyd v Marika Voss and Oona Vartiainen (8.30am); singles ? Georgia Hall v Annika Nykanen (1.20pm), Hayley Davis v Sanna Nuutinen (1.28pm), Bronte Law v Oona Vartiainen (1.36pm), Meghan MacLaren v Marika Voss (1.44pm), Lauren Taylor v Krista Bakker (1.52pm).

Dustin Lance Black Calls 'Ender's Game' Boycott 'Waste' of Energy

Stephen Lovekin/Getty Images

Dustin Lance Black

Summit?s Ender?s Game has found a powerful ally in the LGBT community. Dustin Lance Black is asking LGBT activists calling for a boycott of the movie to put their efforts elsewhere.

?There's so much good to be done right now,? Black wrote on his Facebook page Saturday. ?Boycotting a movie made by 99% lgbt equality folks in an lgbt equality industry is a waste of our collective energy. Making one phone call to a relative in the south who isn't quite there yet would be 1000 times more effective.?

The sci-fi film has come under fire because of the anti-gay views of Ender's Game author Orson Scott Card, who has a history of opposing same-sex marriage and gay rights.?

PHOTOS: 30 Groundbreaking Sci-Fi Films

The group Geek Out is calling for a boycott of the film because of Card's views.

"Do not buy a ticket at the theater, do not purchase the DVD, do not watch it on-demand. Ignore all merchandise and toys. However much you may have admired his books, keep your money out of Orson Scott Card?s pockets," the organization writes on its "Skip Ender's Game" website.

On Facebook, Black added to his original post, writing in the comments: ?The homophobic novelist who wrote the book hasn't been involved in decades. Misguided boycott.?

Black, an active LGBT activist, won an Oscar for his screenplay of 2008's Milk and penned the play 8, which is about the trial that overturned California?s Proposition 8.

Summit has distanced itself from Card, and parent company Lionsgate said Friday it plans to hold a screening of Ender?s Game benefiting the LGBT community.

PHOTOS: Best and Worst Alien Movies

In a statement, Lionsgate called itself "proud longtime supporters of the LGBT community" and said it does "not agree with the personal views of Orson Scott Card and those of the National Organization for Marriage" [the anti-same-sex marriage organization associated with Card].

On July 8, card attempted to head off criticism of his views, issuing a statement to Entertainment Weekly saying the book was unrelated to his views. He asked for "tolerance" from supporters of same-sex marriage because "with the recent Supreme Court ruling, the gay marriage issue becomes moot."

He added, "it will be interesting to see whether the victorious proponents of gay marriage will show tolerance toward those who disagreed with them when the issue was still in dispute."

Card's views previously stirred up controversy in February when he signed on to write a Superman comic for DC. He later dropped out after an outcry over his positions.

Ender?s Game, directed by Gavin Hood, hits theaters Nov. 1. The studio plans to show new footage from the film at San Diego Comic-Con, with castmembers Harrison Ford, Asa Butterfield, Hailee Steinfeld and Abigail Breslin slated to attend.

Museveni Raises Shs 80m For St. Henry?s College, Kitovu

?I am happy to hear that over 70 percent of the students are doing science subjects. It is not only good for the country but also for the students themselves because they can easily get jobs nationally and internationally,? he said.

?

He observed that the effort was also good for parents as they will not have labored in vain to educate their children.

?

President Museveni was today Saturday the chief guest at the fundraising drive at St. Henry?s College Kitovu in Masaka Municipality, to realize funds for the construction of a dormitory, expansion of classes as well as for the building of the school?s laboratory.

?

Over Shs.2.6 billion is required to put the facilities to be able to accommodate the growing population of the school that today stands at over 1,200 students. Over Shs.200 million was realized in cash and pledges. The President who auctioned a heifer at Shs.50 million, made a contribution of Shs.80 million.

?

The function was also attended by the Vice President Mr. Edward Kiwanuka Ssekandi who contributed Shs.3 million.

?

The Kwagalana group from Kampala, led by the Minister of the Presidency, Mr. Frank Tumwebaze contributed Shs50 million.

?

President Museveni lauded the management of St. Henry?s College, Kitovu for teaching entrepreneurship and agriculture noting that there were a lot of opportunities in entrepreneurship and enormous wealth in agriculture.

?

?When I hear that you teach entrepreneurship, you are giving our children spectacles to see opportunities that other people cannot easily see. I am confident about agriculture because there is wealth in modern commercial farming,? the President noted.

?

He further praised the Bishop of Masaka Diocese, the Rt. Rev. John Baptist Kaggwa for introducing income generating activities in the rural areas of his diocese that comprises Masaka, Kalungu, Lwengo, Rakai, Kalangala and Sembabule districts.

?

?I am happy with Bishop Kaggwa because he started a project of development in rural areas. If all families were to get involved, such projects like the construction of school facilities would be easy. That is the way forward because everybody will be empowered,? he said.

?

Earlier, Bishop Kaggwa led a thanksgiving Mass to celebrate the College?s patron Saint?s day. He appealed to all Christians to emulate the example of St. Henry who was principled and strong in his faith in God.

?

The Bishop encouraged students of the school to concentrate on their studies and be creative and productive in public life.

?

Crystal touts tourism for NY hometown after Sandy

LONG BEACH, N.Y. (AP) ? Billy Crystal is going to bat for his New York hometown following the pummeling it took from Superstorm Sandy.

The comedian and "When Harry Met Sally" actor has made a television commercial telling tourists to visit Long Beach, just east of New York City.

Long Beach was among many Northeast communities devastated by the late October storm. Its 2-mile-long boardwalk was destroyed, and hundreds of homes were damaged.

Crystal appears in a TV ad trumpeting "Long Beach is Open for Business."

City officials say Crystal appeared in the ad for free and last month made a $1 million donation for rebuilding efforts.

The commercial is part of a $700,000 advertising campaign. The TV ads will run in the New York City region.

Crystal is a 1965 graduate of Long Beach High School.

Daily Chronicle | At Ramadan meals, Egypt weighs split in society

CAIRO ? As the sun set on the first day of the Islamic holy month of Ramadan, families across Cairo gathered for the fast-breaking iftar meal in a country that in the last two weeks has seen protests by millions, a coup against an elected president and the deaths of dozens of people in clashes with the military.

Ramadan is traditionally a time of personal reflection and feeling a sense of brotherhood with fellow Muslims, but in the aftermath of the military overthrow of President Mohammed Morsi, the divisions among Egyptians extend even down to this traditional meal.

On one side of the city, Tahrir Square remains the symbolic center of the revolution that overthrew Hosni Mubarak and later opposed Morsi. Across town in an eastern district, Morsi?s supporters have coalesced around a major intersection in front of the mosque of Rabaah al-Adawiya.

Breaking their fast outdoors, the people in the two camps expressed bafflement and disdain for the other side.

?I don?t know if the people at Rabaah al-Adawiya are out of their minds or if they are brainwashed,? said Shenouda William, a 35-year-old lawyer, who sat with about 100 people in the echoing emptiness of Tahrir Square to break their fast.

Others described the Morsi supporters in the Muslim Brotherhood as ignorant peasants or possibly Palestinian and Syrian refugees looking for food and a place to sleep.

A Christian, William chose to join the iftar as a symbol of national unity and described this as ?the best Ramadan I?ve ever known because the Brotherhood are not here ? they succeeded in dividing the people, and this will never happen again.?

Egyptians remain divided, however, and while the Brotherhood alienated much of the country in their year in power, they still have supporters who came by the tens of thousands to break their fast Wednesday night in a clear show of strength.

Families thronged into the boulevards near the Rabaah al-Adawiya Mosque and sat under tents or on long sheets of blue tarpaulins to first pray and then eat after the sun set.

Fireworks marked the end of the day and an imam recited the call to prayer as people tentatively took their first sips of water and ate dates handed out to the crowd.

Then came the communal prayer ? an awesome sight as thousands stretching into the distance silently rose and fell in the ritual prostration before reciting ?Amen? in a single voice.

?We do our prayers to bring victory, especially this month with these developments. We hope he will grant us this,? said Mohammed El-Sayyed, a college student from Mansoura after the prayers and before he joined his family for the meal. ?There might be problems and people might die, but resolution will come this month.?

The first iftar of Ramadan is traditionally spent with family, so El-Sayyed talked his father into bringing the whole clan down to the mosque rally ? a move clearly followed by thousands of others as families picnicked around them.

Across town in Tahrir Square, construction worker and youth organizer Ahmed Abdel Aziz sees a kind of family in the more modest gathering of people who ate chicken and rice under the hulking Mugamma building, Cairo?s bureaucratic heart.

?After all the events of the last days, it is great to celebrate the first day of Ramadan in Tahrir. Here, it is better than being at home. I feel like I am with my family here,? Aziz said, drawing with relief on his first cigarette of the day.

Tamarod, the youth-driven campaign that is credited with spearheading the movement to oust Morsi, will hold its own iftar in Tahrir Square on Friday, doubtlessly drawing huge numbers of people. But the anti-Morsi crowd?s numbers are also small because they see themselves as victorious and have less need to show their strength in the streets.

The Wednesday night meal in Tahrir came courtesy of well-known Egyptian director Khaled Youssef, who stopped by to see how things were going.

?Ramadan has always been a time of union and reunion, but this time we have a lost group, a group that doesn?t acknowledge the will of the people,? he said, referring to supporters of the Muslim Brotherhood.

Back at Rabaah Al-Adawiya, where many in the crowd also were eating roast chicken and rice, most refused to believe that most of the country supported the military coup. People suggested that those in Tahrir had been paid off or had been fooled, convinced that the true Egyptians were sitting around them.

?In Tahrir Square now, it is just those from the previous regime, the businessmen, and the military,? said Ali Awad, an elderly, bespectacled teacher trainer from the northern town of Zagazig. ?Those who want things to be right want Morsi.?

But while the crowd outside the mosque certainly represents a large section of the country, it can?t be described as inclusive. All the women without exception wore conservative dress, and sharing space with the portraits of Morsi was a huge picture of ultraconservative icon Omar Abdel-Rahman ? the blind sheik imprisoned in the U.S. for masterminding the attacks on New York landmarks in the 1990s.

At the end of the prayer, several young men chanted ?Egypt, an Islamic state!? and ?By our blood and souls, we will sacrifice ourselves for Islam!? ? the kind of rhetoric that has made many Egyptians uneasy with the Brotherhood and its fellow travelers from the ultraconservative Salafi movement.

Amid the prayer, the food and the camaraderie of the evening outside the mosque, there was also a deep sense of unease at the future.

The government had ordered the arrest of the Brotherhood?s top leadership, most of whom are believed to be hidden among the thousands at the sit-in, and many in the crowd talked about how they had helped those who were wounded Monday in clashes with the military. That violence had left at least 51 Brotherhood supporters dead and hundreds wounded.

Sayyed Ezz, a math teacher from Alexandria, was handing out cups of chilled water to people with his wife. He described how during the trip to Cairo, police stopped his microbus and searched all the passengers ? saying it was like the dark days of the Brotherhood?s repression in the 1950s at the hands of Egypt?s first president.

?They are going to kill us. It?s starting,? he said, ?It is like the days of Gamal Abdel Nasser, and they are going to do it again.?

There are 32 hours, 35 minutes remaining to comment on this story.

Hamm taking plunge into sports world as ESPYs host

LOS ANGELES (AP) ? Jon Hamm is going from a presenter to host of the ESPY Awards, a natural segue for the former three-sport prep athlete who is unabashed in his love for his hometown St. Louis Cardinals.

Hamm called himself a "pretty good" high school player, but is quick to note he was never a threat to make it in the professional ranks.

That's why the 42-year-old actor best known as Don Draper on AMC's "Mad Men" wants to keep the focus on the athletes when he hosts the annual show honoring the year's best sports moments. It airs live on ESPN on July 17 from the Nokia Theatre in Los Angeles.

"When you look at someone else who is excellent at what they do, you can't help but be jealous," Hamm said Thursday. "When you look at what David Freese did in the 2011 World Series, that's performance at the highest level with all the chips on the table."

Freese had two key hits in the late innings of Game 6 against Texas that year, helping the Cardinals force a Game 7, which they won.

"I don't want to disrespect any Blues fans, but the Cardinals are No. 1 in my heart," he said, adding that the Cardinals and NHL's Blues are "1 and 1-A" in his rooting order.

At John Burroughs High in suburban St. Louis, Hamm was on the football, baseball and swimming teams, lettering in all three sports.

"I loved it. A lot of those guys I played on those teams with I'm still pretty good friends with," he said. "It's important for young kids to get out there and move around, especially in the kind of high-fructose environment we have these days."

Hamm is hosting the ESPYs just as he wraps filming on the Disney movie "The Million Dollar Arm," in which he plays a sports agent.

Hosting an awards show is not like hosting "Saturday Night Live," he noted. "But I've never had a problem standing up in front of people making a fool of myself, and I'm sure that will happen at least once during the telecast."

As someone who's been nominated for his share of acting trophies, Hamm knows what it's like to sit in the audience for an awards show.

"You kind of want it to go fast because there's fun parties afterwards," he said, noting that the best hosts "always kind of keep it moving, keep it light, and give you some laughs."

Among the scheduled presenters are LeBron James, Ben Affleck, Sean "Diddy" Combs, Selena Gomez, Danica Patrick, Maria Sharapova, Jason Sudeikis, and Sports Illustrated swimsuit model Chrissy Teigen.

And that if it didn?t, someone at Major League Baseball would turn this into some Soviet-era election in which the glorious voice of the proletariat cried out for Puig to win despite the longest of odds or something. Guess not.

Not that we should take too much from this. The voting procedures for this were even more gonzo than the regular All-Star voting, with Twitter hashtags counting as votes in the final hours before the polls closed. That, combined with open campaigning made this something less than a scientific referendum.

But it may be a broad referendum on what people want the All-Star Game to be. I feel like a Puig vote is a vote for the All-Star Game as spectacle and?excitement?and what people may want to see, regardless of some measure of merit. I feel like a Freeman vote is one in which people look at overall value (and Freeman, having played all year has added more?aggregate?value to the Braves than Puig has to the Dodgers) and decided to reward a greater body of work over a big splash. Maybe this voting is even too silly to determine that. I don?t know.

But I do know that, barring Puig as an injury replacement in the days leading up to the All-Star game, he?s going to be sitting at home and watching on TV. And Jonathan Papelbon will be happy.

As for Delabar: relief pitcher beats out other relief pitchers and it?s hard for me to work up much emotion of any kind about that. But at least this relief pitcher has a great story, so that?s nice.

James 'Whitey' Bulger and his protege fight in court

James 'Whitey' Bulger and his once-loyal criminal apprentice had an angry, profanity-laced exchange in court during Bulger's racketeering trial after his ex-protege called Bulger and his partner 'rats.'

This undated surveillance photo released July 8 by the U.S. Attorney's office shows James 'Whitey' Bulger (l.) with his former right hand man, Kevin Weeks. Weeks took the witness stand Monday at Bulger's racketeering trial and described a double slaying, multiple extortions, and drug dealing.

Tensions exploded as Kevin Weeks was questioned by Bulger's lawyer about a plea deal with prosecutors that resulted in Weeks serving five years in prison after pleading guilty to aiding and abetting Bulger in five murders.

Weeks bristled at attorney J.W. Carney Jr.'s suggestion that he had beaten the system and that he wasn't bothered by his participation in five killings.

"How does it bother you?" Carney asked.

"Because we killed people that were rats, and I had the two biggest rats right next to me," Weeks snapped.

"You suck," Bulger said from his seat at the defense table.

"F--- you, OK!" Weeks replied.

"F--- you, too," Bulger said.

"What do you want to do?" Weeks challenged Bulger.

Judge Denise Casper moved to restore order.

"Hey!" Casper said. "Mr. Bulger, let your attorneys speak for you. Mr. Weeks, here's how this works: You answer the questions, OK?"

Weeks was referring to the prosecution's claim that Bulger and his longtime cohort, Stephen "The Rifleman" Flemmi, were FBI informants on the rival New England Mafia while they were both committing a litany of crimes.

Weeks, 57, said he decided to cooperate with prosecutors and testify after learning that Bulger and Flemmi were informants.

The outburst came on the second day of Weeks' testimony against Bulger. Earlier Tuesday, he offered gruesome details about three murders he said he saw Bulger commit.

Bulger, 83, is accused of playing a role in 19 killings during the 1970s and '80s while he allegedly led the Winter Hill Gang.

Bulger has pleaded not guilty and insists he was never an FBI informant. During the trial, his lawyers have focused much of their energy on rebutting the informant claim.

Weeks, who started working for Bulger as an enforcer in the late 1970s, said Bulger was a mentor, friend and "like an older brother to me."

"He treated me great," he said.

Weeks said he helped Bulger even after Bulger fled Boston in 1994 when he learned he was about to be indicted.

That changed, Weeks said, when he learned that Bulger and Flemmi had been FBI informants for years. He said that went against the South Boston culture to never rat on your friends or your enemies.

Carney asked Weeks if he was concerned that he'd be seen as a rat after he made his deal with prosecutors to testify against Bulger and Flemmi.

"You can't rat on a rat," Weeks said.

Pollution shortens lives in China

china air pollution

Thick clouds of smog have blanketed Chinese cities like Beijing this year.

HONG KONG (CNNMoney)

These are the findings of a landmark study conducted by an international team of researchers, including academics from China's most prestigious universities, published this month in the scientific journal Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.

The researchers found that severe air pollution has cost the 500 million people living north of China's Huai River during the 1990s more than 2.5 billion years of aggregate life.

The study is a first attempt to quantify the health costs of air pollution in the country using data sourced from China. Previous research had relied on extrapolations from pollution levels in other countries.

Some of the world's most polluted cities are located in northern China, and residents are speaking out in greater numbers about choking air pollution, contaminated food, and water that is unsafe to drink.

Air pollution has been a particular source of concern north of the Huai River, a problem the researchers trace to a central planning policy from the 1950s.

For decades, free winter heating was provided to areas north of the river, while no such luxury was extended in the south due to budgetary restraints. The free heating was powered by coal boilers, which resulted in significantly higher levels of pollution.

"The Huai River policy, which had the laudable goal of providing indoor heat, had disastrous consequences for health," the paper says.

According to the paper, the number of harmful particulates in the north is now 55% higher than in the south -- an "extraordinary" level of pollution. The results can be seen in thick clouds of smog that have blanketed cities like Beijing this year.

The health results of such pollution levels are significant, and the study attributes the five and a half years of lost life expectancy "almost entirely due to an increased incidence of cardiorespiratory mortality."

Related story: China pledges to tackle pollution crisis

Other statistics associated with pollution in China suggest the problem will be difficult to control, even if the Chinese government seeks to make rapid improvements.

China now burns 3.8 billion tons of coal each year, nearly as much as the rest of the world combined. China's CO2 emissions rose by 720 million tons in 2011 ? a 9.3% increase. Scientists have found pollution and dust generated in China has been found settling in places as far away as California.

China's leaders have promised that health safeguards will be improved and efforts will be made to control air pollution, but their options are restricted by economic concerns.

Beijing, for example, is worried that higher fuel prices would make life more difficult for cash-strapped citizens.

Still, the pollution problem has the attention of China's leadership.

Speaking at last year's annual meeting of the Communist Party national congress, former Premier Wen Jiabao said health safeguards would be improved.

"We should adopt effective measures to prevent and control pollution and change the way we work and live," Wen said. To top of page

US men defeat Belize 6-1 in Gold Cup play

PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) ? Chris Wondolowski's misspelled jersey was about the only thing that was amiss for the U.S. men's soccer team.

The national team jumped on Belize with Wondolowski's first-half hat trick and cruised to a 6-1 victory to open the CONCAF Gold Cup tournament Tuesday night.

Landon Donovan had a goal and two assists, becoming the first national team player with at least 50 career goals and 50 assists.

But Wondolowski, who just had his first international goal last weekend, stole the show, sporting an extra "W'' ? "Wondowlowski" ? on his red and white jersey when he popped in his three goals against Belize.

Laughing about it afterward, he pondered whether he should wear it for the remainder of the tournament.

"I'm pretty superstitious, so we'll see what we can conjure up," he said.

Costa Rica defeated Cuba 3-0 in an earlier match at Jeld-Wen Field.

The 12-team Gold Cup is played every other year between national teams from North and Central America and the Caribbean. The Group C teams next meet on Saturday in Salt Lake City, with the U.S. facing Cuba followed by Belize against Costa Rica at Rio Tinto Stadium.

Wondolowski is the third American to score three goals in a Gold Cup match, joining Donovan and Brian McBride. The United States has won four Gold Cups since the tournament's inception in 1991. Mexico has won the past two.

"It's just great to get the start, especially in front of some great fans, and they provide such an atmosphere that makes it exciting and it makes you want to go out there and play," Wondolowski said.

The U.S. men were coming off a 6-0 rout of Guatemala in San Diego on Friday, an international friendly to warm up for the Gold Cup. Donovan scored twice, extending his American record to 51 international goals.

That was Donovan's first match after a five-month break from the national team. He was not included on rosters for the U.S. team's June World Cup qualifying matches.

Wondolowski scored his first international goal against Guatemala. Tuesday night's match was just his 11th with the national team.

"I think Wondo realizes, 'Every time I'm on the field, I have an opportunity, and I need to take advantage of it,'" U.S. coach Juergen Klinsmann said.

Belize was making its first Gold Cup appearance. The Jaguars, as they are known, qualified for the competition with a fourth-place finish in the UNCAF Copa Centroamericana.

The U.S. struck early when Wondolowski ? who plays for Major League Soccer's San Jose Earthquakes ? knocked in a rebound off Belize goalkeeper Shane Orio in the 12th minute.

The United States relentlessly peppered Orio with shots and he made a dramatic save when Joe Corona fired at him in the 27th minute. But Wondolowski was able to get another one past him in the 36th minute to make it 2-0.

Belize scored on a penalty kick two minutes later when Elroy Smith fed Ian Gaynair for the header to beat U.S. goalkeeper Nick Rimando.

But Belize, a team made up of a mix of amateur and professional players, lost steam after the goal, coach Andrew Mork said.

"It didn't last long enough," Mork said. "And that really turned the game around for us."

Wondolowski added a third goal in the 40th minute.

The United States took a 4-1 lead in the 58th minute when Stuart Holden scored with an assist from Donovan, giving him 50 for his career.

Donovan got another when he passed to Michael Orozco for a header in the 72nd minute to make it 5-0. He got a goal ? the 52nd of his career ? with a penalty kick in the 76th minute.

"The crowd was great, the energy was great, I thought we started really well," Donovan said. "A little disappointed to give up a goal, but I think it was a great night for us, a great night for the fans and a good start for the tournament."

After the round-robin phase, the winners and runners up from each group, and the two top third-place finishers, advance to the knockout round. The Gold Cup tournament concludes July 28th at Soldier Field in Chicago.

It was the first visit to Portland for the U.S. men's team since 1998. Attendance was announced at 18,724.
